One misconception about visiting Myanmar is that you must buy a tour package before traveling and then change 200-300 USD into Foreign Exchange Certificates on arrival. This is no longer the case. You are free to make your own travel arrangements and you don't need to change any money.

    A word of caution:
There are very few places in Myanmar which will accept so you might be better off purchasing a tour while abroad, otherwise bring adequate cash with you.

  • We sell tickets online through our website here. That's the quickest way to buy a ticket and also at your local travel agent or contact one of our MAI offices.

  • A code share agreement allows each airline involved to sell seats on each other's flights. The agreement between MAI and Jetstar offers you access to both our networks, increasing connection opportunities and frequency of flights. A code share flight has two codes - the MAI number, as it appears on your ticket, and the number of the flight for the airline operating the service.

All about Myanmar!

  • Myanmar is one of the safest countries in the world. Crime rates are very low and travelling around our country is very safe. However, it's always a good idea to remain cautious. The political unrest and fighting that you may have read about is generally exaggerated. The government has signed ceasefire agreements with 17 insurgents groups, most recently with the last remaining resistance of the Karen National Union. So there is little or no fighting now.

Myanmar people are generally calm and happy. By the very nature of their unique traditions they have become known across the world for the genuine warmth of their hospitality. There is little or no religious or racial discrimination in Myanmar. Moslems, Buddhists, Hindus and Chinese often all live side by side in the same street quite happily.

  • Myanmar can be visited the whole year around. It all depends on where you are planning to travel. Officially there are 3 seasons: Hot, Cool and Wet (Monsoon). The Hottest period is from March to May, The Monsoon is from the end of May to mid October and the Cool season is from October to late February.

During the monsoon it gets very wet in Yangon and the coastal regions, but in places like Bagan and Mandalay, it is cool and green with only light showers for 3 to 4 days in a week. These areas get only about 20 inches of rain annually compared to 100-200 inches in Yangon.

It is best to visit the hilly northern regions during the hot season because they will remain significantly cooler. In the cool season temperatures can get as low as 0.C!

Although Myanmar is classified as a tropical country, the northern regions lie above the Tropic Of Cancer and are in the temperate zone.

  • Myanmar is a land of festivals. There are both religious and ethnic festivals the whole year round, especially after the monsoon season. There are 137 ethnic groups in the country and each preserve and practice their own customs and traditions freely. Check our Calendar Of Eventssection for further details.

  • There is no international roaming facility for mobile phones in Myanmar at present. You should avoid bringing mobile phones or telecommunications equipment in to the country. If you do, it will be detained at the airport until departure. There is Internet access available for sending emails provided by two ISPs: Bagan CyberTech and Myanmar Post & Telecoms.

  • There are a number of different options for travelling around inside Myanmar. The right choice depends on the distance you are planning to travel and the amount of time you have available. Learn more about the choices available in the Getting Around In Myamar section of our website.

  • Mosquito repellent and sunscreen is a must. We also recommend light cotton clothing, slip-on shoes or sandals, a sun hat, a light jacket or sweater for the cooler seasons / visits to the more northern, hilly regions. Bring any necessary medications that you would normally use in emergencies, such as antibiotics etc. Most medicines are available but may not be the brand you normally use. It's always a good idea to purchase personal / travel insurance.
